Feed The Beast – Kim Petras
An odd “First” Album Effort
Even though this is Kim’s first major label release it is not her first full body of work release. We had the Clarity Album\MixTape and the Turn Off The Light EPs. However, those bodies of work sound far more cohesive than this studio album release. While I applaud her for pulling influences from all of her past work, it came out as a mess. In the current pop landscape she’s making a huge mark with her talent and presence that is well deserved! With all of that said, there are some fantastically crafted hits in there.
First Half – No Skips
It starts with a banger of a title track! Although sounding a little generic it tunes us into what we’re expecting for the album. It’s a nonstop catchy tune that keeps you dancing along with that throwback pop sound. However, the track is nothing ground breaking.
After that is alone, which we’ve all heard on TikTok nonstop! It doesn’t quite fit the album and seems a bit out of place. Although the song was met with tons of criticism on its release, it’s one of my favorites. That loud catchy chorus with the smooth vibe of the verses pleases my ear every time!
Finally with King Of Hearts we hit something that sounds fresh and impactful! Those amazing vocals, that jarring pump of the changeup of the beat throughout the song- it all just shows the caliber Kim needed to be at for the whole album.
uhoh is one of my favorites from the album with the catchy editing on her voice. That beat makes you want to pump on a runway and the production is next level! Classic Eletropop moment that keeps you coming back because it worms its way into your brain.
Revelations, although meant for a scrapped album, is next level for me! However it is different from the rest of the album and feels a tad out of place. With that being said, I am glad it saw the light of day! Its another strong groovy production with a sick guitar solo ending.
The 2 misfit duds
Bait & Sex Talk are the two I skip every time I play the album. Bait sounds like more of a BANKS song than it does Kim Petras. It’s the most out of place track on the album and serves no purpose. Continuing with that notion is Sex Talk. Although the sound kind of fits the album, it’s just extremely basic and boring. With lyrics that are basic and her voice even sounds bored. She could of repurposed this part of the album with some slower or mid tempo tracks that make an impact.
The Dark Vibes are the BEST
Hit From The Back gives the vibes from her halloween EPs. It has all the darkness in her voice that made those EPs some of her best work. Bringing back the creepy background vocals that build an other worldly atmosphere!
We continue with the best track on the album called Claws! It’s been on repeat for me and her voice is the BEST its been the entire album. The notes she delivers on the pre chorus I could listen to on a loop! This is what the entire album had been missing. I hate that it shows up right at the end. The song is not the pop A.B.C, 1.2.3, like the rest of the album- but a proper track with all the pieces. It’s all carefully crafted with lyrics that grab you and the 3 full classic parts of a song (verses, chorus, and a bridge)! It should have been a single.
Castle In The Sky sound as if ripped straight from the early 2010s and its next level! The production pulling back with just her voice is perfect. It also feel too short because it does move so fast that I must reply it every time. When she stays in that dark & moody place she’s at her best.
Final Verdict
The entire release seem a bit rushed, as if her label told her she needed to release a debut album of some sort. Up until now (label release wise) we’ve had several disconnected single releases. This project came off as a way to throw those onto an album with some additional material. That saddens me because she’s the full package! Her self-released projects were far more cohesive. I look forward to the next album, praying its well-rounded.
